How to Style Wooden Flooring for 2019/2020

Wooden flooring is a timeless look that never seems to go out of fashion and it’s something that I’m very much lusting after in my own home. If you’re considering getting wooden flooring or currently have wooden flooring (super jealous) then there are some simple do’s and don’ts to make sure you’re making the most of that beautiful flooring.

Types of wooden flooring

There are a number of options if you’re after wooden flooring that can suit difference scenarios and budgets. Engineered wooden floors are becoming a really popular option, they deliver a warm and welcoming statement, full of natural beauty, durability and will stand the test of time for both style and quality. From a practical point of view they are much easier to keep clean than carpets, which are easily stained and can be full of hidden dirt and dust - which is one of my biggest gripes with my own home. It’s also a healthy choice, especially if you have allergies. Carpets collect dust, pollen and other particles which re-circulate in the air and can cause irritation, so if allergens are an issue wooden flooring is a definite must.

You can get a range of colours/wood grain along with laying them in different ways. For example herringbone style is not only popular for tiles but is becoming even more popular for wooden flooring too.

Add more natural materials

When styling wooden flooring I think it’s quite nice to add to the natural material by mirroring this with other pieces in the room.  For example, wicker, rattan or even Jute rugs can really compliment natural floorings.

Plants are another way that’s fab to style with wooden flooring - those deep green hues naturally compliment wood and are becoming a massive trend. One thing to bare in mind is that plants on floors cause a lot of water damage, too. Placing a trivet under the sauce, so air can get under the plant. Otherwise water can wick underneath and sit there for months, and you'll end up having to sand or patch that spot - so really make sure you’re thinking about placement.

Colours

Painting your walls when you have wooden floors is really a personal choice. Wood is such a versatile choice in terms of complimenting different styles, however there are a few hints and tips that can help you get that wow factor. White may seem a little bit of a “cop out” - but when styled correctly it can truly look stunning, especially if you really want to draw attention to your gorgeous wooden floors.

Another option which is big for 2019/2020 are deep blues, greens and greys - this can seem a little daunting because it goes against the usual light and airy feel we often strive for in our homes. But done correctly it can be warm, homely and quite a show stopper.

Texture

Adding textures is quite important if you want a warmer more inviting feel, sometimes wood can feel industrial (which is actually a style I love) and dare I say it.... cold. This is where adding texture can be hugely important. Be it a rug, throws, cushions or wall hangings are a really easy way of doing this - which can be updated easily too. Adding texture is all about layering, yes adding a few key pieces will go a long way, but to really get the interior designer style you should look to combine multiple textural elements to bring the space to life. One of the best ways to layer textures is to start with larger textural pieces, for example a velvet chair or an exposed wooden table (or both) then add smaller accessories and soft furnishings until the room feels complete to you. A great way to achieve this is to trial multiple textures together before deciding what works best for you and the room you are decorating.

I would really love to hear from you if you have wooden floors and how you’ve styled yours - have you got your own top tips?
