Our Shepherd's Hut Haven
We found the most stunning shepherd's hut on Airbnb in High Kelling, just outside Holt, and it was everything we didn't know we needed. Set in beautiful grounds, surrounded by towering trees and with horses grazing peacefully in the next field, it felt like our own little slice of countryside heaven. We even had two very friendly cats pop by to say hello, the perfect welcoming committee! Our host went above and beyond, providing gorgeous breakfast bits for us to enjoy in the morning. It's those thoughtful touches that really make a stay special, isn't it?
Friday Night: Drinks, Dinner & Reconnecting
After settling in, we headed to The Chubby Seal for a pre-dinner drink while we waited for our reservation at Byfords. The pub was cute and cosy, with the most incredible vibes. I treated myself to what I can only describe as the nicest Aperol Spritz, and we just sat there chatting away – no interruptions, no "Mum, can I have…", just us. It was heavenly. Then came Byfords. Oh my goodness, the vibes! This place is absolutely immaculate. Gorgeous venue, stunning food, and the perfect atmosphere for a romantic evening. If you're heading to Holt, this is an absolute must-visit.
Saturday: Browsing, Trains & Seaside Strolls
The next morning, Jamie spoiled me with breakfast in bed (yes, I'm very lucky!), and then we headed into Holt to explore. And what a treat that was!
Holt's Incredible Shops
Holt is a treasure trove of independent shops, charity shops, and galleries. Every charity shop we popped into was amazing, full of beautiful items, though I'll admit some were a little pricey! I very nearly bought myself a coat, but since my husband got me a gorgeous Barbour for my birthday, I couldn't quite justify it.I also discovered a new local artist whose work completely blew me away. They work with screen printing, collage, and then paint into the images, it's stunning and very much on my wishlist! We both agreed that we need to come back to do our Christmas shopping here. The variety and quality of the stores is just incredible.
All Aboard the Heritage Train
Next up, we hopped on the Heritage Train from Holt to Sheringham because I was desperate to try Crumble Crib. The train was a bit pricey, but the views were absolutely breathtaking, and the train itself was oh-so-quaint. There's something magical about chugging through the Norfolk countryside on a vintage steam train.Sheringham Seaside Vibes
Once in Sheringham, we finally got our hands on those famous Crumble Crib treats (totally worth the hype!), strolled along the beach, mooched around more charity shops, and enjoyed a few beers before catching the train back to Holt. It was the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure.
Saturday Evening: Marshland Views & Fine Dining
By early evening, we were getting peckish again, so we made a reservation at The Dun Cow at Salthouse. This pub is absolutely gorgeous, with breathtaking views across the marshes. The food? Top tier. Honestly, every meal we had that weekend was incredible, but there's something about good food with a stunning view that just hits differently. We headed back to our shepherd's hut for a lazy evening by the fire with more wine, soaking up every last moment of peace and quiet before reality came calling.
Back to Reality
Sunday brought us back down to earth with kids' clubs and football matches – but that's the beauty of a weekend escape, isn't it? It recharges you just enough to dive back into the chaos of family life with a smile on your face.If you're looking for a romantic getaway or just need a break from the daily grind, I cannot recommend Holt and the surrounding North Norfolk area enough. It's close enough for a quick escape but feels a world away from everyday life.
Have you been to Holt? What are your favourite spots? I'd love to hear your recommendations for our next visit!
