The whole moving process and selling your home process can be going on, and you can still make a start on getting everything out. Do things in your own time, and when you feel ready to take the next step, not when someone else decides you should be doing certain things.
Before the chaos begins, take 10 minutes on moving day to ground yourself. I always find that a quick breathing exercise or a short meditation helps me stay calm when things feel overwhelming. Try this: sit with a cup of tea, take five deep breaths, and remind yourself that moving is temporary—the stress is just one day, but the fresh start lasts much longer.
You could even involve the kids in this if they're around. A simple grounding exercise like the 5-4-3-2-1 technique (name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste) can help everyone feel more settled. When everyone's calm, the whole process runs smoother, and you'll actually enjoy the day more.
Well, one option would be to send the kids to their friends houses or even to see a relative. If you do this, then it means that you won’t need to worry about them becoming a distraction while you’re trying to get everything done.
One thing I wish I'd done on my last move was pack a separate box with everything we'd need for the first night—toiletries, pyjamas, phone chargers, a change of clothes, and some comfort items. There's nothing worse than rummaging through boxes at 9 PM looking for a toothbrush when you're exhausted.
Label this box clearly and keep it with you rather than on the removal van. Include tea, coffee, biscuits, and maybe some easy snacks too. If you have kids, pack their favourite teddy or comfort item. It makes settling into your new home feel less chaotic and gives everyone a sense of normalcy on an emotional day.
Moving home is a big deal—it deserves to be marked! Whether it's ordering a takeaway for dinner, having a special breakfast in your new kitchen, or simply sitting in your new living room with a cup of tea and reflecting on the day, take a moment to celebrate what you've accomplished.
I always tell my family that moving day is an adventure, not just a chore. Taking photos in the empty old house, joking about the quirky things you'll miss, or planning what you'll do first in each room of the new place shifts the whole energy. It reminds everyone (including you!) that this is exciting, not just stressful.

If You Haven’t Sold Your Home
If you haven’t sold your home but you are ready to start getting things out of there for now then you can look into a self storage facility. You can store your items in here until you need them, or until you want them for any reason. This also makes it much easier to show your home to potential buyers because there isn’t clutter everywhere, giving the home a clean slate kind of vibe.
The whole moving process and selling your home process can be going on, and you can still make a start on getting everything out. Do things in your own time, and when you feel ready to take the next step, not when someone else decides you should be doing certain things.
Hire Help For The Process
Another point you should consider is whether you need help. There’s a lot of talk these days about how much you can do yourself instead of hiring professional help. However, when it comes to moving home you do need to get the experts on your team. This can help you avoid the risk of an injury and ensure that it’s all taken care of for you.Create a Moving Day Mindfulness Moment
Before the chaos begins, take 10 minutes on moving day to ground yourself. I always find that a quick breathing exercise or a short meditation helps me stay calm when things feel overwhelming. Get The Kids Out Of The Way
The great thing about kids is that they always want to help you with different tasks. This is lovely but the problem is that while they start with the best intentions, they tend to get in the way a lot This can add to the stress and cause you to have trouble when it comes to ticking off all the things that you need to do. It can also make you forget things that you do need to be focused on. So, how should you deal with this?Well, one option would be to send the kids to their friends houses or even to see a relative. If you do this, then it means that you won’t need to worry about them becoming a distraction while you’re trying to get everything done.
Pack a "First Night" Box
One thing I wish I'd done on my last move was pack a separate box with everything we'd need for the first night—toiletries, pyjamas, phone chargers, a change of clothes, and some comfort items. There's nothing worse than rummaging through boxes at 9 PM looking for a toothbrush when you're exhausted.

Celebrate the Move (Even If It's Small)
Moving home is a big deal—it deserves to be marked! Whether it's ordering a takeaway for dinner, having a special breakfast in your new kitchen, or simply sitting in your new living room with a cup of tea and reflecting on the day, take a moment to celebrate what you've accomplished.
