Christmas Days Out in Norfolk 2026: Festive Family Adventures
There’s something lovely about putting a few Christmas dates in the diary. An evening wrapped up under twinkling lights, a steam train ride or a wander around a beautifully decorated house can make the build-up feel every bit as special as Christmas Day.
With children getting older, I’m drawn to outings that everyone can enjoy together. A visit to Father Christmas might still be part of your plans, but light trails, festive markets and winter walks offer plenty of ways to spend time together too.
If you’re looking for Christmas days out in Norfolk in 2026, here are eight ideas to help you plan a little seasonal magic.

Details checked on 24 October 2026. Events may run on selected dates only. Check the organiser’s website for current availability, prices and access information before travelling.
1. Thursford’s Enchanted Journey of Light

For an outing full of colour and sparkle, Thursford’s Enchanted Journey of Light combines indoor festive scenes with an outdoor trail of illuminated sculptures. The route is around one kilometre long, so allow time to take it all in rather than rushing through.
This would be on my shortlist for a family evening where the lights are the main attraction. You don’t need to book a Santa visit to enjoy this event.
When: 2–24 December 2026.
Tickets: £18 off peak or £25 peak; children aged two and under are free but need a ticket.
Santa’s Magical Journey is a separate booking option that includes the light experience and a visit to Santa. The Adventure Play Fair costs extra.
Find out more and book at Thursford.
2. Luminate at Sandringham

A winter evening outdoors feels more inviting when there’s a light trail to follow. Luminate brings an illuminated route to Sandringham, with light installations and interactive elements along the way.
Allow approximately 60–90 minutes for the trail. For families with older children, this is an appealing alternative to a grotto: a shared evening out with plenty to look at and photograph.
I’d plan this as an unhurried outing, with warm layers, sensible footwear and time afterwards to talk about everyone’s favourite part.
When: November–24 December 2026; check the booking calendar for the opening date and available sessions.
Booking: Tickets must be booked online in advance.

3. The Norfolk Lights Express

There’s something wonderfully festive about a train journey after dark. The Norfolk Lights Express combines an illuminated heritage train with lineside displays, narration and a soundtrack.
The 2026 theme is “Around the World”, making this an interesting option for children who enjoy a story alongside the spectacle.
I like the idea of making the journey itself the occasion: arriving with time to spare, settling into your seats and watching the scenery change beyond the windows.
Where: North Norfolk Railway, Sheringham.
When: Selected dates between 14 November 2026 and 3 January 2027.
Booking: Advance booking is essential.
Dogs are not permitted on this service, apart from assistance dogs.

4. Christmas at Holkham Hall

Holkham offers several different ways to celebrate, whether you’re looking for decorated interiors, a family event or Christmas shopping.
Holkham by Candlelight runs on selected dates from 29 November, with further visits between 27 and 30 December. That makes it worth considering for those quieter days after Christmas too.
For younger children, the Festive Family Days take place on 19 and 20 December, while An Audience with Father Christmas runs on 21 and 22 December. These are distinct events, so choose the experience you want before booking.
For a lower-cost outing: Holkham’s Christmas Market takes place on 11–13 December. Entry to the market is free, although parking charges apply.

5. A Woolly Christmas at Blickling Estate
Blickling’s 2026 programme brings together a decorated house and a Shaun the Sheep sculpture trail in the garden.
The Find the Flock trail runs from 14 November 2026 to 17 January 2027. Inside the hall, A Woolly Winter Adventure runs from 28 November to 4 January, with festive decorations and family activities.
For anyone who enjoys looking closely at creative details, this sounds like a lovely way to combine art, fresh air and Christmas atmosphere.
Good to know: The house event requires no advance booking, although timed entry may be allocated on busy days. National Trust members enter free; standard admission applies to non-members. Children under five go free.
Quiet hours in the house are advertised on Tuesdays and Saturdays, 2–3pm. Check opening times before visiting.
6. Bure Valley Railway’s Festive Express

For families looking for a Christmas train ride with a Santa visit, the Bure Valley Railway’s Festive Express departs from Aylsham Station.
The experience includes a 30-minute steam train ride and a visit to Santa’s Grotto, making it a useful option if you’d prefer a shorter journey.
When: 5–6, 12–13 and 19–24 December 2026.
There’s also a Noël Night Train on 4, 11, 17 and 18 December, offering a different festive outing with a 60-minute steam journey and lights at Aylsham Station.
These are special events, so check their individual ticket details rather than using the railway’s ordinary fares as a guide.

7. Pensthorpe Christmas Market

If your idea of a festive day out involves browsing handmade gifts and choosing a few treats, Pensthorpe’s Christmas Market is worth a look.
The 2026 market promises more than 80 stalls, with local makers, independent businesses and a mixture of indoor and outdoor shopping.
When: Sunday 29 November, 10am–3pm.
Pensthorpe members can attend the market free, and market visitors can purchase reduced-price entry to the nature reserve. Reserve admission is separate, so check the combined cost if you want to extend your outing.
Dogs are welcome at the market; check the reserve’s separate rules if planning to explore further.

8. ROARR!’s Magical Father Christmas Experience

For children who enjoy a little adventure alongside their Santa visit, ROARR! is advertising a Magical Father Christmas Experience with an enchanted trail, gingerbread and a gift for every child.
When: Selected dates between 4 and 23 December 2026.
This is one to investigate if you’re looking for a family outing built around meeting Father Christmas. Check the event’s booking page carefully for the full itinerary, age guidance and admission inclusions.
If anyone has dietary requirements, ask about the gingerbread before booking.

Making Christmas days out feel manageable
You don’t need to fill every weekend to make December special. I’d rather choose one or two outings that suit our family and leave space for slower days at home.
Before booking, check the total cost, including parking and extras. Think about whether your children will enjoy an evening event, how much walking is involved and whether you need a quieter session.
For a smaller budget, Holkham’s free-entry Christmas Market is a useful starting point, with parking to factor in. Existing National Trust members can also make use of Blickling’s festive programme.
Mostly, I want these outings to give us time together: away from the Christmas jobs, enjoying something lovely and coming home with cold noses and a few new memories.
Which Norfolk Christmas day out would you choose?

I do love all the lights at Christmas. I also love a good Christmas Market and have a few trips planned where we are
