Ideas for a Small Toddler Boy’s Room

Living in a modern house we have the usual third box bedroom and our little boy, Henry, has been lumped with it! When we designed his nursery we found it so difficult to find furniture that would work,  but we wanted to make it as functional as possible. I’m so happy with the way it has turned out and really works well with the space that we have. However, it won’t be long until we will have to update his room when he becomes a toddler. Darcie was one when she moved in to a bed, so if Henry follows suit then we will have to re-do his room in the near future. 

The largest piece of furniture in a child’s room is the bed, for us after a bed is placed in his room there is very little room for anything else. An obvious choice would be a mid-sleeper. This means that some of the storage needed can be placed directly under the bed. It’s such an easy way to make space. However, if Henry is anything like his sister I would be too nervous to put him in one at a young age. There are smaller beds than a standard single available, so your child can have a larger playing space. Also it’s great for cot to bed transition as a smaller bed isn’t so daunting!

Storage for us is a big issue anyway, irrespective of the fact he has the smallest room. Using shelves for books and some toys is a great way of clearing floor space opposed to have toy boxes.  In Darcie’s room we used spice racks for her books and I think we will do the same for Henry’s. Another way of creating more space is using the space underneath the bed. Whether is be for toys or clothes underbed storage for small rooms is a must. 

For a small room you should really think carefully about the furniture you need. In Henry’s room he just has a chest of draws and I think we will stick with that when we change it over to a toddler room.  Their clothes are so small, extra furniture like a wardrobe is just not essential and would take up valuable floor space.

For now I’m happy with my baby boy’s room, but I am looking forward to re-doing it when he’s that it older! I love decorating rooms, and in the new year I have a couple of projects I would like to get working on.
