Mealia App Review: Is It Worth It? (And How It Saved Me Money on Our Weekly Food Shop)
Meal planning is one of those things I know makes life easier… but when you’re busy (and your brain is already full), it’s also the first thing to slip.
For ages, my weekly food shop looked like this: no real plan, a quick wander around the supermarket, grabbing bits “just in case”, and then somehow still ending up stuck at 5pm wondering what on earth we were going to have for dinner. And of course, the cost always crept up.
So when I started using the Mealia app (paid version), I was mainly hoping it would bring a bit more ease to food shopping and maybe help us cut down on waste. I didn’t expect it to make such a noticeable difference to our budget too.
This is my honest Mealia app review and the big question: is it worth it? For me, yes — and I’ll explain why.

What is the Mealia app?
Mealia is a meal planning app designed to make the whole “what’s for dinner?” situation much simpler.
Instead of trying to plan meals in your head (and forgetting half of it by the time you’re in the shop), Mealia helps you:
- plan meals for the week
- organise what you’re cooking
- create a shopping list based on what you actually need
And that last part is where the money-saving really starts to show.
Why I tried it (and what my food shop was like before)
Before Mealia, I was doing what I think a lot of us do:
- going into the supermarket without a proper plan
- picking up ingredients that felt useful
- buying duplicates because I couldn’t remember what we already had
- doing extra “top-up shops” midweek
It wasn’t just the money — it was the mental load. Meal planning can feel like another job on the list, and when you’re juggling family life, work, and everything else, it’s easy to fall into the habit of winging it.
But winging it is expensive.

How Mealia saved me money on my weekly food shop
This is the part that surprised me most.
Since using Mealia, I genuinely think I’ve saved around £45 compared to what I’d normally spend when I do a food shop with no planning and a lot of wandering around the shop.
Here’s why I think it’s made such a difference:
1) I shop with intention (not impulse)
When I’ve got meals planned out, I’m not walking up and down aisles throwing in random bits “just in case”.
I go in knowing what we need for the week — and that alone cuts down the extra spending that sneaks in when you’re browsing.
2) Fewer “top-up shops”
You know the ones: you pop in for milk or bread and come out with snacks, a “treat”, and three things you didn’t know you needed until you saw them.
Because Mealia helps me plan properly, I’m not having to do those extra trips as often — and that’s a big part of the savings.
3) Less food waste
When you buy without a plan, it’s so easy to end up with ingredients that don’t quite go together… and then they sit in the fridge until it’s too late.
With Mealia, I’m buying food with a purpose. Things get used up because they’re part of an actual plan, not a hopeful idea.
4) Less decision fatigue (which leads to better choices)
This one sounds small, but it matters: when I’m tired and stressed, I’m more likely to make expensive choices — last-minute “easy” dinners, extra snacks, or grabbing whatever looks quickest.
Having meals planned takes away that end-of-day panic and helps me stick to what we’ve already bought.
The feature that saves me the most time (especially for online shopping)
One of my favourite things about Mealia is how it helps when you’re doing an online food shop.
Instead of manually searching and adding everything one by one, Mealia can automatically put the items you need into your online shopping basket based on your meal plan and shopping list.
That means:
- less time spent scrolling and searching
- fewer forgotten ingredients (and fewer last-minute “oops” shops)
- a much quicker, smoother checkout
If you’re already juggling a million things, this feature alone can feel like a lifesaver — and it’s a big part of why Mealia brings so much ease to the whole weekly shop.

What I love most about Mealia (the ease factor)
The biggest reason I think Mealia is worth it is the ease it brings to food shopping.
It takes away so much of the mental load:
- thinking of meals everyone will actually eat
- remembering ingredients
- writing lists
- trying to keep it all within budget
It’s not just about saving money (although that’s a huge win) — it’s about saving time and brain space, which feels priceless when you’re managing family life.
Is there a downside?
Honestly, the only “downside” I’ve noticed is that it works best once you’ve used it for a couple of weeks and found your rhythm.
Like any new system, the first week can feel like a bit of a reset — you’re getting used to planning differently. But once it clicks, it becomes one of those tools you wonder how you managed without.
So… is the Mealia app worth it?
For me: yes, absolutely.
If you’re someone who:
- wants to save money on your weekly food shop
- is fed up of wandering around the supermarket with no plan
- wants to reduce food waste
- wants to make meal planning feel easier (not harder)
- shops online and wants to save time building a basket
…then I genuinely think Mealia is worth it, especially if you’re using the paid version and you’ll actually use it consistently.
Saving around £45 compared to my usual “no-plan” shop has been a big deal — but even beyond the money, it’s the ease that’s made the biggest difference.
Over to you
Have you tried a meal planning app before — or are you more of a pen-and-paper person?
And if you’ve got any food shopping money-saving tips, I’d love to hear them. Share them in the comments!

I LOVE this! If i can save time, money, and space with one app and making cooking easier, I’m all for it. This sounds perfect.
This was a great review! Meal planning really does make a difference, not only for saving money but also for reducing stress throughout the week.
This app sounds so useful. I struggle with meal planning too and often come home after spending lots and we still don’t seem to have enough.
I have to meal plan before I go shopping as I have no idea otherwise and we used to waste so much fresh produce. That’s awesome that the app has helped you to think clearer about meals and the grocery shopping you’re doing x
I will download it right away. I would love to save some money on food, I feel a lot of the stuff we buy ends up as a waste.
Planning meals ahead definitely makes grocery shopping easier. The automatic shopping basket feature sounds incredibly convenient and practical.
I am hearing about the Mealia App for the first time and it sounds pretty helpful in saving money related to food shopping. Thank you very much for the recommendation.
I feel like planning for dinners has become an entire job in itself! This app sounds extremely useful – thank you for sharing as I have never heard of it before.
I’m still pretty new to meal planning, so any tool that makes it easier is always welcome. This app sounds like it could be a huge help. Between running a business and keeping up with work, anything that helps lighten my mental load is worth considering. I’ll definitely be checking this out.
