Embracing Reading Again: My 38 Books for 38 Years Challenge
At the start of this year, I decided to set myself a personal challenge: to read 38 books for my 38th year. As life got busier with teaching, family, and the daily juggle, reading had quietly slipped down my list of priorities. But I missed it, the escape, the inspiration, and the calm that comes with getting lost in a good book. I needed to get that back.
With everything now at the touch of a button and those constant dopamine hits with every tap of a screen, I realised I was losing sight of what truly brought me joy. I found it harder and harder to simply sit and be, without needing some kind of stimulation. Picking up a book again felt like reclaiming a little piece of myself, a way to slow down, be present, and rediscover the simple pleasure of being absorbed in a story.

Why I Set This Goal
Reading has always been a source of joy and relaxation for me, but over the years, I found myself picking up books less and less. Setting a goal to read 38 books felt like the perfect way to reconnect with something I love, while also giving myself a little nudge to make time for it again. I knew I needed a goal to drive me to do it, and wanted something tangible, which is where I got this idea of reading a book for every year I had been alive. As if I’m almost 40!
My Progress So Far
I’m currently on book 11, and already the experience has been so rewarding. Some books have surprised me, some have challenged me, and others have simply been a comforting escape at the end of a long day. I’ve rediscovered genres I’d forgotten about and found new authors to love. I finally also read the classic, Rebecca, and I think this book has been my highlight to date. This story gripped me in ways I didn’t think an almost 100-year-old book could. I keep wondering whether or not to do some more book reviews on here, so if this is something you’re interested in then feel free to let me know.

Rebecca
Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier, is beautifully haunting and I can see why it’s a complete classic. One of my favourite reads of all time.

Freckles
You know when a book/story comes along right when you need it the most? Freckles was that for me, comforting and a gentle reminder of your worth.

Pagans
Pagans was an absolute ride! Loved the concept of this one and kept me hooked all the way through! Can’t wait to read the next one.
Making Time for Reading
Finding time to read hasn’t always been easy but I didn’t want this to be an excuse. I’ve started carrying a book with me for those little pockets of time, waiting in the car, whilst my daughter is at theatre school, during lunch breaks, or just before bed. Instead of times where I might hop on my phone and doom scroll, I have tried to switch that habit up and replace it with a book. It’s become a mindful habit that helps me unwind and recharge.
The Benefits I’ve Noticed
Reading again has brought a sense of calm and mindfulness to my routine. It’s a way to step away from screens, slow down, and enjoy a bit of quiet time. It’s also sparked new conversations at home and given me fresh ideas for both teaching and blogging. I have had so many people who have asked me about this challenge, given me book recommendations, even given me books and it’s been a really lovely way to connect with people. I have also had a lot of people reach out and say how they want to do this too and are rather envious that I have managed to read 11 books in three months, in reality, this does not take that much time at all, and it’s about prioritising how you want to spend your time.
Looking Ahead
I’m genuinely curious where this little experiment will take me next, and what stories will end up sticking with me long after I turn the final page. If you’ve got a book you think I should add to my ever-growing list, please pop it in the comments or message me, I’m always on the lookout for my next great read. And if you’re tempted to set your own reading goal (big or small), let me know! Maybe we can cheer each other on.
