Getting Started With Decluttering Your Home

Is your home feeling cluttered lately? You’re not alone. The vast majority of us have plenty of belongings inside our home that we neither need nor particularly want. This is fairly common. We tend to gather all sorts of items, from poorly decided purchases to freebies we think we might as well hang on to. But when you begin to get more and more items that you don’t use and that don’t have any sentimental value, your home can begin to feel crowded, uncomfortable, unsightly and overwhelming. This isn’t how things should be! Your home is the space that you should feel comfortable in. It’s where you retire to at the end of a long day working, socialising, exercising or doing anything else. It’s where you eat, sleep and relax. It’s where you entertain family and friends. It’s where you should feel your best. Now, there are countless steps you can take to improve your home, but decluttering is one of the most effective. Here are some tips that can help you to get your home clear and clean again!

Go Through Your Belongings

Start out by looking around your home and going through your belongings. What do you actually need? What has sentimental value? What has decorative value? Anything falling outside these brackets probably doesn’t need to be in your home. If it’s unused, unwanted or simply sits around without bringing much to your life, chances are, it doesn’t need to be taking up space in your home. This may take some time depending on how many different items you have in your home, but it’s worth scouting through everything, dividing things into keep and remove piles.

Finding New Homes for Unwanted Items

There are going to be plenty of items that you no longer want or need. They need to find a new home if possible. There are a few ways to go about this. You may want to show your family and friends the different items and see if they want or have any use for them. If there are any items that hold value, you may want to consider selling them on platforms like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Vinted, Schpock, Etsy, Depop, car boot sales and more. If there are items that can be donated to charity shops, you could do some good and donate them to a good cause. Other items could be recycled.

Find Storage Options

There are going to be some items that you do want to keep, but that can look messy left lying around. This is where storage options come in useful. From shelves to toy boxes, painted sideboards, ottomans and so much more, there are countless storage options out there. Browse them and find what works for your home and your belongings.

Revisit

You should revisit your decluttering process every so often - perhaps twice a year. This will ensure that new clutter doesn’t accumulate and take over your home once again.

A decluttered home really will look and feel great, making all the steps above more than worth it. Hopefully, some of the information provided here will help you to achieve your home goals!
