A Late-Summer Reset for Busy Mums
Late summer can feel like a strange in-between, can’t it?
The days are still warm, the kids are still full of energy, and yet there’s this little undercurrent of “September is coming” that makes everything feel slightly louder in my head.

For me, it’s the season of half-finished plans and slightly sticky floors. The season of thinking, “We should make the most of it,” while also feeling like I could happily lie down for a week.
And that’s exactly why I love this first-harvest moment on the calendar.
Lughnasadh (the start of harvest season) isn’t something I treat as a big celebration — it’s more like a gentle nudge to pause and ask:
- What’s actually working right now?
- What’s draining me?
- What do I want to carry into autumn?
Not in a dramatic “new me” way. In a real-life, “let’s make the next few weeks feel a bit easier” way.
The first-harvest mindset (for real life)
When I think “harvest”, I don’t just think of fruit and veg (although yes, I’m always up for a crumble).
I think about the things we’ve been growing quietly in the background:
- routines that have started to click
- kids getting a bit more independent
- small habits that have helped
- the way we’ve coped with the busy bits
This is your reminder to notice what’s already there.
And then, gently, to prune.
Because late summer is also when I realise I’ve been doing certain things the hard way: saying yes to too much, carrying mental lists for everyone, trying to keep the house “under control” when life is just… life.

A 15-minute late-summer reset (step-by-step)
This is my favourite kind of reset because it’s short enough to actually happen.
1) Make a drink and sit down (yes, first)
Before you tidy anything or write anything, sit. Even if it’s just for a minute. Let your nervous system catch up.
2) Choose one tiny area
Pick something that will make you feel lighter when it’s done:
- the kitchen counter
- the school-admin pile
- your handbag
- your bedside table
Not the whole house. Just one spot.
3) Clear + reset for 10 minutes
Set a timer. Put on a song. Do what you can.
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s that little “ahhh” feeling when one area looks calmer.
4) Write three lines
In a notebook or your notes app:
- I’m proud of…
- I’m grateful for…
- I’m letting go of…
Keep it simple. No essays required.
5) Pick one “savour” plan for the next 7 days
One small thing you’ll actually do:
- a sunset walk
- a picnic tea
- a solo coffee in the garden
- a trip to pick berries
Something that reminds you: we’re still here, and it’s still summer.
Gentle prompts (for journaling or Notes app)
If you want to go a bit deeper, these are lovely:
- What have I managed this summer that no one sees?
- What do I want to carry into autumn?
- What can I stop doing “the hard way”?
- What do I want to feel more of in September?
If you’re in that late-summer in-between too, you’re not alone.
If you do this little reset, tell me one thing you’re proud of from this season — big or small. I’ll be cheering you on.
