How to Love Spending Time In Your Garden

It’s the house itself that accounts for the bulk of the property’s value, but the outdoor areas aren’t nothing. In fact, in the UK, studies have shown that usable outdoor space can account for up to 20% of the property’s value, and it’s even higher in areas where spacious gardens are hard to come by(we’re looking at you, London).

So yes, if the garden is valuable, the question is: why do so few people spend time in theirs? It might have something to do with the UK’s weather (OK, forget that, the climate is definitely a factor), but still. Done correctly, a good garden will essentially become an additional living area, one that elevates your lifestyle at home.

In this post, we’ll run through a few strategies that can take your garden from ‘forgotten space’ to ‘star of the show’ in a matter of months.

Hire a Landscaper

You’ll be more likely to spend time in your garden if it looks fantastic. The problem? Making your garden look fantastic requires time, effort, and skills, and they can be in short supply, especially if you’re also juggling a job and family life. It’s not feasible to think that you can then create a quality garden that makes an impact.

Happily, no one says that it’s you who needs to be the one to do that. Hire a landscaper, and you’ll get a beautiful yard with none of the fuss. It’ll cost you, but it’ll be worth it if it dramatically increases the amount of time you spend in your garden.

Create a Social Space

A beautiful garden sets the foundation for spending time in your outdoor area, but it can’t do it all on its own. A picturesque garden is nice to look at, but you’ll also need to think of a few practical inclusions to ensure you can comfortably spend time out there. Combining quality outdoor furniture with durable yellow balau decking will give you the infrastructure you need to spend long days in the garden with your friends and family. Add a BBQ, outdoor lighting, and a sound system for the full cosy, social experience.

Managing the Elements

Remember earlier, when we all agreed that the UK’s weather is probably a reason why homeowners spend less time in their garden than they’d like? We stand by that, but we should also acknowledge that while the elements can be inconvenient, they’re not insurmountable. A good firepit can keep you toasty and warm on those chilly evenings, while installing a covering can keep you protected on those rainy days. People tend to venture inside when the rainy and chilly weather arrives, but it can be nice to stay outside — provided you’re not exposed to the elements.

The winter months are especially nice for sitting outside, especially once the sun sets. The stars are brighter in the winter than at other times of the year, so it’ll just be you, your family, and the universe — it’s much better for your soul and spirit than spending your time inside on your smartphone!
